Mackie U16 v Ross Sutherland U16 Cross conference fixture September 29 by Eric Lindsay –
Mackie U14 33 RS 21
Mackie U15 50 RS 0
Mackie U16 54 RS 28
THIS was a welcome return to rugby action for the U16 squad with no action in the previous weeks due to a free weekend, followed by Gordonstoun scratching the conference fixture, which was scheduled for a home tie – the lads were pitching for some game time against our friends from the North !
It was a chilly start to proceedings with the younger age groups kicking things off at Redcloak, followed by the U15 & 16’s. As anticipated, with our guests having limited playing numbers the sides were evened up with a rotating number of lads from the home side.
Mackie was showing the upper hand in proceedings with some finely worked tries in the 1st half, with some good handling skills and fast ball. Ross Sutherland showed promise at the scrum, disrupting the Red ‘n’ Blacks on a couple of occasions, but overall our backs were on a different level, taking the game to the visitors, and scoring 5 tries in the first half to no reply.
There were notable scores for Alec Sweetnam, Ross Buchanan, Harris Ferrol and a brace for Harris Mitchell, and with Craig Strachan chipping in with a few conversions.
A quick turnaround into the 2nd period of the game and a switch in personnel saw a much tighter encounter, with tries from Archie Robertson, Alec Sweetnam and Rikki Gilchrist for the home team, and with replies from our our guests with 4 tries of their own…incidentally all scored by Mackie players !
It was a good workout for both sides and sets the boys up nicely for the visit of Granite City which should be a more physical encounter .
Many thanks to our visitors for taking the time and effort to make the long journey down to Redcloak, safe travels home ..
