A TRAGEDY has happened just outside Stonehaven, with a train derailment at Carmont.
A major incident has been declared and there is a huge response by the emergency services, including air ambulance, at the stretch of the Dundee – Aberdeen line some 3.5 miles outside the town.
Images posted on social media showed smoke billowing from the scene and carnage on the line, with a section of the train lying across the tracks crushed by other carriages.
Addressing Holyrood Nicola Sturgeon said: ”There are early reports of serious injuries.”

Following the tragic train derailment south of Stonehaven this morning, Provost of Aberdeenshire and Mearns Councillor, Bill Howatson, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved in the terrible train derailment near Stonehaven this morning.
“This is a harrowing time for all concerned and, on behalf of the council and all Aberdeenshire residents, I would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response to this tragic incident and their ongoing efforts at the scene.”
