COMMUNITY councillors enjoyed a stroll along the corridors of Mackie Academy into new sports facilites – courtesy of a virtual reality presentation by Live Life Aberdeenshire, LLA.

A team of officers from LLA visited Tuesday’s meeting of Stonehaven and District Community Council. They described their plans to upcycle Mackie’s swimming pool into a multi-purpose space – the Plaza – which will be used by both the school and the wider community.

Members had objected to the proposals being approved without full community consultation. But there were no complaints when they saw the work intended.

Instead of the swimming pool, there is to be a large multi-purpose space with cushioned vinyl flooring and sports grade wall lining.

For the changing rooms – whose condition was described as ‘quite poor’ – the upgrade will see male, female and unisex facilities. The revamp will also address problems with the current layout, which forces pupils to go outside to access one of the gymnasiums.

And the final boost to the sports facilities is a fitness room, making use of space previously assigned to drama. A heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system will be installed, along with mirrors.

Black detailing is all that will remain of the former drama space
