Stonehaven is to enter this year’s Beautiful Scotland competition – a competition aiming to help towns display not just their flowers – but also their community spirit.

The entry is being spearheaded by the town’s Horizon Group.

Convenor John Cruickshank said: ‘’With our new boardwalk and the community garden project that will soon get underway, we will have some great projects to showcase.

‘’But above all, we think dusting the town down after lockdown and making it look its best is just what we all need to lift our spirits.’’

Mr Cruickshank said both the Community Council and the Aberdeenshire Council-led Town Centre Improvement Group were supporting the entry. And he said he was keen to have as many of Stonehaven’s groups, schools and individual residents as possible take part.

‘’It is in effect Stonehaven that is entering – not Horizon. We want to partner with the community, businesses and organisations,‘’ he said.

‘’And it’s not just our planters and hanging baskets they will look at. Beautiful Scotland has a much broader approach now.

‘’Community participation and environmental efforts like beach cleans and litter picking are equally important.’’

Judging for Beautiful Scotland will take place in August. If you would be willing to help Stonehaven’s entry, please contact Mr Cruickshank by emailing

The local Gardening Club hope to have their Plant Sale at the Plainstones on the last Saturday in May. A great opportunity for people to buy their plants and make Stonehaven beautiful.
