A memorable week at Stonehaven Golf Club

It’s been a tumultuous seven days at Stonehaven Golf Club. The Pennant team took a major scalp in beating Royal Aberdeen, Erin Herd won the Girls Nett Championship at The Scottish Junior Masters, Callum Steel bravely secured the Handicap Trophy and the Texas Scramble Open resulted in success despite haar setting like jilly over the course. And just for good measure, Kevin Riddell notched a remarkable hole-in-one at the par four 10th, There’s never a dull moment at SGC (haar not withstanding).

First, Erin Herd. What a fantastic achievement to win such a prestigious national trophy. Erin triumphed over a quality field at Strathmore GC, her three round total of 206 securing victory by eight shots. The club and town are proud of you Erin, congratulations.

Callum Steel emerged victorious after the final round of Stonehaven’s Handicap Trophy. His third round lead evaporated as he climbed aboard the bogey train but he manfully disembarked for the last six holes, completing them flawlessly to win by two strokes. Raymond Shearer ran Callum a close second with a closing 63, Kevin Murdoch coming up on the rails with two birdies in his last four holes to finish third. Seven players finished within six shots of the winner in this year’s well contested Handicap Trophy.

In the Ladies Medal Division 1, Fiona Currie also birdied two of her last four holes but it wasn’t enough to overhaul F Armstrong who carded a round of 67. Division 2 was won by J Hunt (65) and the Ladies section now limbers up for the forthcoming club championship.

The Junior Section held two competitions over the weekend. Congratulations to James Boggan for his first success at the club, achieved with a solid 18 points in the nine hole Stableford. Lewis Moir won the eighteen hole version in a high scoring narrow victory over Josh Killoh. The junior section continues to thrive. The club is always thrilled to welcome youngsters to the sport and if you’d like to find out more please contact us for details.

Finally, Kevin Riddell and his hole-in-one. It’s customary to buy the drinks in the clubhouse after an ace, a ritual I’m sure he honoured. When a hole in one’s achieved on a par four however, the rules are that you buy drinks for every club member for the duration of the following week. Cheers Kevin, mine’s a double.
