Stonehaven Golf Club this week

The penultimate week of the golfing season found members occupied by Stableford competition, men, women and juniors alike. In an ominous welcome to the brink of the winter season, the temperatures turned chillier and the wind freshened, third layers  were duly pulled on and caps exchanged for tammies.

The men’s weekend Stableford was won by Mike Griffin, putting himself in a commanding position to win the Eclectic Trophy awarded for the best cumulative four rounds during October. Indeed he’s in such a commanding position after three rounds that only a bad Friday night curry or torn hamstring descending the first fairway can stop him now. Once again Jason Barbour was reduced to tears, that’s two consecutive weeks he’s shot a gross sub par round yet finished empty handed. Always the bridesmaid never the bride, we’ll have to start calling him Monty.

The midweek Stableford yielded some fascinating results. Last week’s winner Gary Robertson must have spent seven days quaffing enough celebratory champagne to sink a ship given he finished bottom of the pile this time around. The unconfined joy of a debut victory at SGC is difficult to describe, first time winners are therefore forgiven when celebrating to excess Gary. Hopefully you’ll will be back on all cylinders in due course. Meantime John Macfarlane won the event, a narrow victory on countback over Ron Gilmour, thanks to a clinching birdie on the 17th. Alan Mailer finished third and is now awarded the Ian Poulter nickname ‘ The Postman’ given the club’s resident postie Brian Hardstaff seldom troubles the leaderboard so must relinquish the crown.

The Ladies section completed their weekly 12 hole Stableford, Fiona Lamont once again victorious with Catherine Duncan finishing runner-up. These two names are as synonymous with the top of a leaderboard as Heinz is with baked beans. The Juniors were also out on the course despite chastening conditions, up & coming starlet James Boggon winning their weekly competition, congratulations James.
