From Jackie Niven of Our Mearns Tourism Association –

With the long days of summer coming to a close and winter fast approaching, we begin to see fewer numbers of visitors from further abroad. However, consumer trends in the tourism industry suggest that more and more holiday-makers are looking for mini-breaks close to home and to experience local culture and goods. With that in mind, we are launching “Our Creative Backyard,” a Visit Mearns advertising campaign to increase visitor numbers from Aberdeenshire during this off-season period.

Successful funding bid for promotional campaign

As part of a wider Scottish Government support package linked to the Tourism Task Force Recovery plan, VisitScotland created the Tourism Destination and Sector Marketing Fund for groups across the country at regional and local levels. The fund supports industry members throughout Scotland to promote tourism aligning to specific post-Covid consumer trends.

Our Mearns Tourism Association successfully applied for support from the fund in order to produce marketing for Mearns’ businesses focusing on artisanal services and goods. Throughout the Mearns, we find many businesses and individuals using local resources and inspiration to craft world-class food and beverages, art, and home goods. An artisanal experience of the Mearns includes eateries sourcing local produce, accommodations highlighting local art, and tours of distilleries, studios, farms, and harbours that supply the industry.

The Mearns has an incredible wealth of makers: from traditional crafts to locally-sourced chippies, the home grown and homemade offerings of our Mearns businesses prove that staying local can produce a first-rate holiday experience. Aligning to larger campaigns for 2021 and 2022, and the festive season, our campaign will highlight the incredible artisanal offerings that make for a perfect local mini-break.

The campaign will produce free marketing for Mearns’ businesses, activities, and events that offer artisanal or homemade goods and services. Launching in November and continuing through March, “Our Creative Backyard” will primarily utilise social media and digital publications to feature marketing and promotional content. We will include links to booking information and business websites, so visitors can engage directly with those offering goods and services.
