The steep path up to the Bervie Braes and the outside of St James’ Church will both be upgraded if the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee approve funding applications when they meet tomorrow.

Anyone walking from the harbour to the War Memorial will have encountered the challenging and unstable section of pathway taking them from Castle Street up to the Bervie Braes road.

Stonehaven Town Partnership, STP, want to improve the climb by cleaning the linear drain running the length of the footpath, and installing a handrail. A new concrete path with a tamped finish to provide grip for walkers and new stone steps at Castle Street would complete an upgrade costing £32,325.

The improvements will be undertaken whilst the Bervie Braes are closed to traffic – the road reopens on 28 March 2022.

STP have worked in conjunction with council officers to finance the project. And to complete their funding package they have applied for £22,925.75 from the Coastal Communities Funds – money provided by Crown Estate Scotland and ringfenced for projects with a link to the coastline or sea. Some £89,558.75 was allocated to the Kincardine and Mearns area for 2021/22.

Area ‘Top Up Budget’

Meanwhile St James’ Church, who have raised over £250,000 in recent years to repair and refurbish the grade one listed building, are seeking a further £2,000 from the area committee towards a series of improvements in the churchyard.

A project costing £11,000 will include the church gate piers being realigned to give better access, the concrete pathway being resurfaced, a new noticeboard, the churchyard gravel surface being refreshed and the exterior of the hall repainted.

The Council allocated £80,800 to each Area Committee for the financial year 2021/22 for the Area Committee Budget.

The Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee meets tomorrow (Tuesday February 8) at 10am by Skype. The full details of all the funding applications, along with the meeting agenda and all reports can be found online – along with a link to join the meeting.
