Stonehaven Chorus are holding their Spring Concert on Sunday 21st May 2023 at 7.30pm in Stonehaven Town Hall. The chorus will be conducted by Musical Director Ralph Jamieson while well known local pianist Blair Cargill will accompany on the organ.

Aberdeen Sinfonietta, an orchestra of around 28 players, led by Bryan Dargie, will also accompany the choral in the performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah. In addition to the choral there will be 4 soloists, Susan McNaught, soprano, Sarah Shorter, mezzo soprano, Matthew McKinney, tenor and Ross Cumming, bass.

We are greatly looking forward to being able to perform Elijah as originally this piece was planned for our concert in 2021 but had to be postponed due to the covid pandemic though members did continue to rehearse using zoom.

The oratorio is a very dramatic work which tells the story of the 9th century prophet Elijah documenting the key incidents in his life. It is in 2 parts, the first of which tells of his mission to try to stop the people from worshipping the prophets of the false god Baal during a prolonged drought in Israel and instead return to Jehovah, Lord God of Israel. Eventually the people start praying to God for forgiveness and the rain falls.

In the second part Elijah, fearing for his life due to his persecution by Queen Jezebel, falls into a depression and goes into the wilderness whereupon he then asks for God’s help to continue his work. In the climax of the piece Elijah ascends to heaven in a fiery chariot.
