Are You a Man (or Woman) for A’ That?

By bellmannews / May 7, 2023

IS your love like a red, red rose? Do you wish some folks would see themselves as others see them, or have sympathy for our earth-born companions? Or do you have an appreciation for bousin drunks and short lived pleasures like the aurora borealis’ race or snow falling in a river?

If the answer to any of the above is yes – and especially if you are scoffing at obvious examples of the bard’s work – then you should join Stonehaven’s Fatherland Burns Club at its AGM at the Community Centre on Thursday May 11 at 7.30pm as new members are very much wanted

The club have organised Burns Suppers for decades, celebrating the poet’s links with Stonehaven and the Mearns thanks to his father’s birthplace in rural Dunnottar. Before the onslaught of Covid, they introduced our schoolchildren to their national poet through mini Burns suppers.

And, in recent years, members have contributed to the rejuvenation of the Burns Memorial Garden, with the inclusion of QR coded recitations.

Unfortunately, as is the way with many organisations, committee membership has fallen and new enthusiasm is needed for next year’s assault on the haggis.

As president Douglas Samways intimates in his annual report: ”Unless more people came forward, the Club will likely have to fold.”

Mr Samways is appealing for Stonehaven’s fans of the Bard to show their support for the Club’s aims and efforts by going along to the AGM on Thursday, where you will be made very welcome.

“Here’s to us, who’s like us Damn few, and they’re all dead.”
