Stonehaven Golf Club Report w/e Sunday 2nd July 2023

The Gents’ Club Championship, played over four rounds, culminated in an exciting finish on Friday night with Craig Irvine (pictured) surging into the lead with a stunning final round of 61, his best ever, to leapfrog Bruce Ferguson and Iain MacLeod to win the Cub Championship Trophy with a score of 265. Bruce, scoring a steady 67, managed to maintain the runner up position, just two shots behind Craig, on 267. Winning his seventh Championship, Craig has earned the bragging rights as he now has one more title than dad, Neil! The Gully Cup was also a close affair. Craig and Bruce both finished on a total of 3 under par for the gully holes but, by virtue of being one shot better in the final round, Craig won the Trophy on countback.

The Senior Gents’ Open on Monday was well attended by members and non-members alike. Local knowledge didn’t help in the Scratch competition with Ian Jack (Deeside) scoring 66, Stewart Finnie (Caledonian) on 67 and Gordon Adamson (Royal Aberdeen) on 71. Willie Shepherd won the Hippisley Trophy for the best local nett score. See full results below.

On Tuesday the Ladies’ Section enjoyed their annual outing, this year to Ellon McDonald Golf club. There were some terrific scores despite it being a longer course than they are used to and it being a very wet affair. Liz Powell triumphed with 40 points, pipping Jan Bradford with 39, and Evelyn Gilmour was third with 36 points.

Stonehaven Juniors qualified for the final of the Aberdeen & District Junior Pennant League for the first time since 2011. On Sunday they took on Banchory at Banchory Golf Club but, despite some superb golf on display, they were unable to secure the win. The team should be delighted with the Runners Up position after a season of close competition.
