Stonehaven Golf Club Report w/e Sunday 24th September 2023

Congratulations to Neil Irvine who claimed the honour of becoming North-East Senior Champion of Champion when he defeated Mike Singer from Turriff at the 19th hole at Banchory. Neil’s match was one of eight played involving club champions from all over the North-East in a season long competition which was started by the Evening Express in 1984 and is now sponsored by law firm Aberdein Considine. On his way to the final, Neil beat the senior scratch champions from Dunecht, Torphins, Murcar and Portlethen. Neil has a good track record in golf competitions as he has been Stonehaven Club Champion six times and Senior Champion nine times.

The ladies’ section enjoyed their second outing of the season, this time to Edzell’s Westwater Course. It was a chilly start and an autumnal feel to the air but, despite being an unfamiliar course to many, there were some very good scores with Christina Kirkwood topping the leaderboard with an impressive 43 points.

The Open Mixed Greensomes was held on Sunday in testing conditions. Club members, perhaps used to the tricky wind, made a clean sweep of the prizes despite some of the visitors being in close contention. The Scratch prize and Local Trophy was won by Wilma Lawrence and Ross McAllan with 79. The nett competition was closely contested with Fiona and Gordon Lamont winning with 61, closely followed by the pairings of Catherine Duncan and Callum Mitchell and Jane and Archie Kennedy both on 62.
