Stonehaven Golf Club Report w/e Sunday 2nd October 2023

The ladies enjoyed their version of the Solheim Cup last week with a competition held over two days between teams representing the Captain and Vice-Captain of their section. After seven closely contested matches on Tuesday, the result was all square. However, the Captain must have given her team a severe talking to as they came out all guns blazing on Thursday to secure the win by 2 points.

In their version of the Ryder Cup, Jim Hepburn captained his veterans’ side to a fourth consecutive and comfortable 6-2 victory over our club Vice-Captain Chris Taylor’s Rookies (pictured). The Veterans have won the Ryder cup every year since its introduction. Well done Captain Jim, to say he was delighted is an understatement.

A team from the Junior Section recently played at Elderslie Golf Club in Glasgow in the Scottish Junior Team Championship. They qualified for the event having been the runner up in their regional pennant league. This was an individual Stableford event with the best 5 from 6 scores counting for the team scores and it was great to see 119 juniors playing on the day. The morning starters definitely got the best of the weather with heavy rain starting, as forecast, at 3pm and the wind increasing with gusts up to 50mph in the hours to follow. Despite not coming away with any prizes on the day our team, comprising Jamie Sutherland, Charlie Locke, Josh Killoh, Lewis Moir, Joe Lindeman & Matthew Moir, all enjoyed the day out and the experience.

The Club’s Shieldarroch & Glenshieldaig Trophies, donated by Gordon Adamson and the late Willie Donald, are awarded for those who played consistently well over the season. The Shieldarroch Trophy is for the winner of the best 10 Gross Scores from 45 counting events. This year the trophy was shared by Iain Taylor and Craig Irvine who were tied on both the total of 646 and the best individual round of 61. It was quite remarkable for both of them to have had a 5 under par round to share this trophy. The Glenshieldaig Trophy is for the winner of the best 10 Nett Scores from 45 counting events – won this year by Colin Arthur with a total of 636. Congratulations to Iain, Craig and Colin.
