St James the Great Episcopal Church Stonehaven has won an award from the National Churches Trust at their annual awards ceremony in London on Monday the 6th November.

This award is for the Church and Community Volunteer category and was for St James’ contribution to setting up a drop in evening in the Church hall for the Ukrainian Refugees that came to our area to enable them to meet together and offer mutual support to each other. Host families are also welcome and these evening have proved very successful and well attended enabling our congregation to learn from the refugees and them from us.

The second project taken into consideration for the award followed a chance conversation at a warm space drop in session one afternoon with some people from a local learning disability charity. They were looking for projects for the people using their services, which led them and us developing a disused vegetable patch at the back of the church into a small market garden. This has enable them to learn to grow, harvest, cook and eat the produce as well as learning new skills. Local volunteers helped to clear the land. Generous people in the town donated fruit trees and bushes along with a small greenhouse.
