So Here it is Merry Christmas

THE lights are switched on and twinkling on Stonehaven’s Christmas tree after days of preparation and a festive get-together in the Market Square.

Dedicated Red Cross volunteer Margaret McPherson, who retired recently after 33 years’ helping in the local charity shop, had the honour of plunging down the switch after an enthusiastic countdown by the waiting crowds. She was assisted in her task by her young friend Ava Reid.

The tree measuring over 30 feet in height, was provided by Richard Holman Baird from his Rickarton Estate.

And a team of volunteers from a host of community groups worked together in the biting cold to put it up – there were representatives from the Stonehaven Town Partnership, Community Council, Men’s Shed, Fireballs Association, Horizon Project – and more since many present can wear several hats!

STP chairman Jim Stephen wore his Fireballs beanie while organising all the action over the two days needed to put up and decorate what is surely the loveliest tree in the North-east.

Carlo Williams and David Dallas braved the heights to set lights and baubles in place. Meanwhile Paul Tosh of the Men’s Shed kept an eye on technical aspects of the project.

One hitch was the failure of the lights on the star – they’d been in good order when tested. The plug was checked and fuse changed to no avail. Local retailer Nickel and Dime were able to provide a replacement, which was set in its lofty location by Carlo Williams, who took the liberty of adding a couple of his own personal touches and kindly provided the photograph below.

The afternoon’s entertainment in the Square included performances from Newtohill Pipe Band and the Mackie Academy School Bands and Choir – it was organised by the Stonehaven Lions Club, with the support of the Round Table.

Just like to mention that the wonderful sound of the Kilwhang Bell ringers and the team from Mearns FM provided the entertainment also, which has been omitted from the report above .
Everyone did a superb job on the day and added to a great celebration for Stonehaven.
