Sea Cadets Celebrate Achievements

By Jane Cruickshank / December 19, 2023

STONEHAVEN’S Sea Cadet unit celebrated a year of achievements last night with a parade and award evening attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Kincardineshire, Mr Alastair Macphie.

The youngsters of TS Carron treated visiting parents and friends to a colours ceremony before undergoing an inspection by Mr Macphie, who later addressed the unit.

He said: ”It is such an important thing to celebrate your success with the community here. At his coronation, His Majesty said that is what he wants to see.”

Mr McPhie noted the support given to the cadets in all their activities and said this was, ‘first class’. And he encouraged those Cadets who had not won awards to look to their fellows on either side and consider what they could do for greater success.

Cadets enjoy raft of opportunities

This year, the youngsters of the ship’s company have gained 220 qualifications and spent 1261 hours afloat – engaging in opportunities such as rowing and sailing. Their Commanding Officer Michael Blacklaw said they were gaining skills and friendships they wouldn’t find elsewhere.

Mr Blacklow added they were enjoying a different kind of adventure, as the Sea Cadets provides opportunities other children don’t get

Awards and Recipients

One of the awards, the Betty Topp Memorial Trophy, was presented for the first time in recognition of decades of service given by the Stonehaven woman who died earlier this year.

Along with the late Margaret Waldie, Miss Topp establised a Girls Nautical Training Corp section at TS Carron in 1962. She was awarded the Captains Medal in 2014 after 50 years of continuous service to the Sea Cadet unit. The award in her memory was presented by her nephew Mr Brian Knowles.
