Stonehaven Golf – Winter League finalists decided

And so, after eighteen weeks of competition, the gruelling winter league programme nears its climax. Last weekend marked the final opportunity for competitors to register a score towards their aggregated total and this Saturday’s Finals Day qualifiers are now known.

The winter league is split into three separate competitions; Singles (nett), Doubles (nett) and Doubles (scratch). It’s difficult to say which is the most auspicious but I suppose those brave enough to compete in the Singles rather than cower behind the safety of a Doubles partner deserve heightened admiration. There’s no hiding place if you’re playing alone and in this respect Damien Shine is currently cock of the walk given he’s atop the 8 qualifiers who’ve made it through to the Singles Final.

In each of the 3 sections, averaged aggregated totals are carried forward and combined with the score this Saturday to decide the eventual winners. There’s still all to play for in each of the sections so it’ll be early to bed on Friday night with a good back without a bad curry.

In the Singles it’s very tight given Douglas Barnard in 8th position is (almost) within a solitary Stableford point of the leader . Several others contended for qualification as the season ground on but were pipped at the post, not least Stuart Dempster who finished 9th, just one place away from qualification. He had been sitting 8th on Friday but fluffed his lines when the pressure came, notching a lame 34 points on the last qualifying day. Perhaps, as in previous years, he should have entered the doubles with Barry McGillivary but then again, McGillivary’s desperately poor showing in the Singles this year (17th) suggests Dempster was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Scott Cameron also ditched his doubles partner for the ‘glory’ of the Singles format but pulled up well short of the mark in 12th place, never recovering from his lamentable second round total of 28 points. (Think on next season gentlemen, dropping your pals for personal glory is not the cakewalk you think it might be).

The qualifiers for the three competitions are listed below and we wish all of them good luck in the Final this weekend. No fist fights in the car park please gentlemen.
