Belmont Brae – The Only Way is Up?

ABERDEENSHIRE Council are looking for comment on their proposals to make the Belmont Brae a one-way street and for additional parking spaces at the beachfront,

In Spring 2022, almost 1,000 people took part in a survey looking at various aspects of road and footpath use, and the sometimes conflicting needs of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Key locations in the town were examined: Cowie and the promenade; Market Square area; Cowgate, Shorehead and Bervie Braes; and the railway station.

From this survey, a series of recommendations were made – then scored for their achievability, affordability, health and safety merits, and for environmental impact and sustainability.

This scoring led to a list of proposals to be achieved in the short term – including those for the Belmont Brae and along the beachfront, where the once temporary ‘spaces for people’ measures will be made permanent.

The Council have prepared a survey on these new layouts and hope to gain enough evidence of support to help achieve funding for the works.

Making Belmont Brae one way is an excellent idea and long overdue. There are pros and cons to both but whichever direction is chosen the scheme must remain accessible to pedestrians and should include significant improvements to the footpaths. Presumably, if the road is only being used ‘One Way’ there should be plenty of room to accommodate a decent footpath wide enough for a wheelchair and a child’s buggy on at least one (if not both) side of the road.

I feel making the Belmont Brae the main priority

The idea of making the Belmont Brea one way seems a waste of money.
If I were making it one way it certainly wouldn’t be closed off from the top as it’s quite a hike if your walking up the brea plus it would hold up cars on the main road at the bottom waiting for cars to get up.
Whereas if you drive down at least you can see the road ahead in both directions
