10 Years of Mearns FM by Daniel Veltman
Your community radio station is starting its 10 years’ celebration of broadcasting at this Saturday’s Stonehaven Feein’ Market.
Mearns FM is run entirely by volunteers and serves the areas of Stonehaven, Laurencekirk and Inverbervie
Community Radio in the Mearns area began in 1993 following a visit to
North East Community Radio by some members of the Stonehaven Community Centre Management Committee. A steering group was formed and Stonehaven Community Radio was established.
It transmitted for the first time during July 1994 from the old primary school toilet block in Stonehaven Community Centre.
At that time community stations could only operate for 28 days at a time.
Over many years, a lot of people’s hard work and dedication, the station, which began as Stonehaven Community Radio well over a decade ago, reformed as Mearns FM.
Mearns FM’s first transmission was on Feein’ Market Day on Saturday June 6th 2009, so we are fast approaching our official 10th year anniversary date.
And 10 years on, Mearns FM is becoming more popular every week.
The station broadcasts from the rear of Stonehaven Town Hall and has over 35 presenters providing community information, music from across the decades and great chat every day.
