A MACKIE teacher was recognised when Live Life Aberdeenshire’s Active Schools Team presented its “Volunteer of the Year” title at Aberdeenshire Sports Council’s awards evening in March.

Jenny Munro, who took second place in the awards, works as a visiting PE specialist at Bervie Primary School. In addition to this role she contributes many additional hours as a volunteer supporting extracurricular sporting opportunities for local children.

In 2019 Bervie School received sportscotland’s Gold School Sport Award – Jenny’s running of clubs such as Basketball, Fitness Club, Play Leaders’ and Sports hall Badminton were all crucial in achieving the award.

Her dedication to supporting these extracurricular opportunities is vital to ensuring children from Bervie School can participate in a wide range of sporting opportunities.

Award winners were Fiona and Andy Clegg, who have been volunteering with Active Schools since 2011, running Uryside School’s football club. Fiona, with the support of Active Schools, manages the administration and organisation of the club, while Andy coaches.

On average, during their time volunteering, 43 children have attended the sessions each week. That means approximately 10,000 participation sessions!
