Final Whistle on Forest Park

ABERDEENSHIRE Council’s Business Services Committee will vote on Thursday to determine whether Mackie Academy Rugby Football Club are granted their asset transfer request for Forest Park- or not.

The request for ownership of the land was made under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015. According to the Scottish Government website, this legislation ”helps communities to do more for themselves and have more say in decisions that affect them.”

Ironically perhaps, as the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee refused the request at their meeting last August – contrary to officers’ recommendation – the final say on the transfer was passed to the Business Services Committee.

The Business Services Committee includes councillors from across the Shire. They looked at the asset transfer last November, but voted for a site visit before deciding the matter. This took place on January 6.

Now, when they meet at 10.15am on Thursday (January 12) the councillors are required to make their final determination. As before, officers are recommending they effectively approve the transfer for the nominal sum of £1 – subject to planning permission.

The Rugby Club has a membership of almost 1,400 members but faces the loss of its one remaining pitch in 2026. Meanwhile, the Save our Park group submitted a petition with 1165 names objecting to the proposal. It will be a nail-biting morning for many.

The full agenda of the Business Services Committee, along with the associated reports and a link to the meeting are all available online.
