Stonehaven Golf Club Report w/e Sunday 15th January 2023
Club stalwart, Bill Chalmers, has hung up his golf shoes and clubs for the last time after playing at Stonehaven for 53 years. He joined the club in March 1970 and is the current longest serving member. Bill, 87, was still playing 18 holes twice a week with regular partners, Harry Roulston and Neil Irvine, every Wednesday and brothers, Raymond and Ian Shearer, every Sunday until the start of this year. Enjoy your retirement Bill!
The strong south westerly on Wednesday put off the majority of the seniors who decided the warmth of the club house was preferable to slogging their way around the course. However, the players who did brave the elements recorded some remarkable scores with Bob McAlpine making light work of the conditions.
After another wash out on Tuesday, the ladies started in cold but sunny conditions on Thursday. Somewhat surprisingly, the forecast was accurate and they finished looking like the proverbial drookit rats. Despite soggy cards and saturated waterproofs some of the ladies managed to come in with scores that would have been more than acceptable on a dry and sunny day.
Bad weather and course closures are only to be expected in January but the course closure on Saturday, due to overnight rain, must have been particularly frustrating for the gents when the weather improved as the day progressed. The course reopened on Sunday and the Winter League did go ahead with Malcolm Ritchie cementing his lead in the Singles competition with 38 points. At the halfway stage Craig Irvine and Fraser Stark are at the top of the Gross Doubles and Neil MacArthur and Graeme McFarlane top the Nett competition.
