KEEP THE DATE FREE -RICHARD MICHAEL IS BACK IN STONEHAVEN !

Award winning pianist and educator Richard Michael BEM returns to his native Stonehaven to give a concert in Dunnottar Church on Friday 22nd September 2023.

Recognized as one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists and educators, Richard has taught thousands of youngsters the art of improvisation through his pioneering work in leading the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra since 1972. He began his professional career playing hotels in Stonehaven and Aberdeen with the Alec Sutherland Band and with his dad’s concert party.

In addition to his work with FYJO, Michael is Honorary Professor of Jazz at St Andrews University and is featured every Sunday night on BBC Radio Scotland’s Jazz Nights as the programme’s “jargon buster.” He also has a new best-selling book, Jazz Piano for Kids, published by Hal Leonard Inc.

Richard is joined in this concert by his daughter Joanna Duncan who is a violin and piano teacher who enjoys working with students of all ages, especially those interested in learning to improvise, even with just a couple of notes! She is currently involved in several educational and music-for-wellbeing projects in and around Edinburgh where she lives with her husband and teenage sons, and enjoys baking, gardening and cycling around the old railway network beneath the city’s streets.

Leader of the New Edinburgh Orchestra since 1997, Joanna is also the musician at Dalmeny Parish Church near South Queensferry. She runs Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra’s ‘Teenies’, a weekly online jazz tutorial for primary school age children.

This promises to be a night not to be missed. More details closer to the date .. but make a point of getting it on the calendar now so that you don’t miss it.
