British Empire Medals Presented

STONEHAVEN residents recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List received their honours this week.

The Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire Alastair Macphie presented Margaret Edmonds, David Fleming and Colin Moir each with British Empire Medals in a ceremony held in the former court room of the Sherrif Court Building on Monday.

Proud friends and family gathered for the event and heard Deputy Lieutenant Gordon Ritchie reading the citations earning each of the recipients their accolade.

Margaret Edmond’s voluntary and charitable services were described, particularly to the Red Cross, which she joined in 1957. Margaret was Commandant of the women’s detachment of the charity in Stonehaven before going into ambulance work and went on to become an instructor in ambulance work in 1967.

Meanwhile David William Fleming, was recognised for his services to the community in Stonehaven, which over the years has included serving as chair of Stonehaven and District Community Council, trustee of the Tolbooth Museum Association and vestry member of St James’ Church.

And years of dedication to search and rescue earned Colin Hugh Moir his British Empire Medal. As a Volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officer and lately Deputy Station Officer, Mr Moir has been in action for some four decades. He has even recruited two of his sons to the service.

Rebecca Allen of Stonehaven was also awarded a BEM for her voluntary services to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, serving as Secretary, Scottish Council, RNLI, Committee Member, Aberdeen and District Lifeboat Fundraising Branch, and Lifeboat Administration Officer, Aberdeen Lifeboat Station. Ms Allen has chosen to receive her medal in Aberdeen.
