IT is not often that reduced parking and closed pavements in the town centre is good news – but works to repair lamposts at the Market Square will no doubt be greeted with pleasure by Stonehaven and District Community Council, SDCC.
Aberdeenshire Council’s Environment and Infrastructure Services have just issued a no waiting and footpath closure notice at Market Square North for five days commencing Monday November 18 to facilitate street lighting repairs.

It is perhaps unfortunate the information about the forthcoming repairs had not been available for last night’s meeting of SDCC as the failed lights at the Square were flagged by chair David Lawman, who said he was concerned about safety at the imminent Christmas tree light-up event which will see around 1500 people gather.
Mr Lawman’s comments sparked a long discussion about works needed elsewhere in the town.
Members heard from Cllr Alan Turner who said one of the difficulties faced by the local authority was a shortage of electricians. But they will now be keeping a keen watch our for future announcements attending to:
- Lack of lighting at the leisure centre/ Beach Road
- Potholes which prove a trip hazard to pedestrians on the Old Pier – made worse by poor lighting in the area.
