A Win for Which Witch

A youth cast from Ury Players has won through to the regional round of a prestigious drama festival.  The team made up of actors between the ages of 13 and 17 took part in the Aberdeen District round of the Scottish Community Drama One Act Play Festival.  The Aberdeen  round took place last month in Culter Village Hall and the Ury team were lucky to pick up two trophies – the  Barclay Harvey Trophy for the best team from Kincardine and Deeside and the  Annie Inglis Cup for the best Youth Team.  They finished in 3rd place overall which meant that they not only qualified for the next round of the Youth competition but also the next round of the Open competition.

They performed Which Witch by Geoffrey Bamber which was a comedy based around a council instituting a policy to curb witchcraft.  Old Mrs Gridley comes under suspicion and her friends Jenny and Jackie, ‘ably’ assisted by Jenny’s boyfriend, Melvin, endeavour to clear her name – a task hampered by the arrival of an unwelcome face from Mrs Gridley’s past. The cast also included a paced-out hippy musician, Three-Chord Bob.  There was lots of good comments from the audience and the adjudicator in Culter mentioned the strong acting ability of the young cast and their command of the stage.  He wished them all the best in the next rounds of the competition.

They travel Brechin City Hall on Saturday (15th March) to take part in the Northern Division Youth Final where they will be competing against a team from Stromness Academy and Curtains Up from Aberfeldy.  The team which wins that round will go on to compete against 3 other teams from across Scotland in the Scottish Youth Final which is at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews in June.
