The Annual General Meeting of Stoney’s very own historic Fatherland Burns Club takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday 20th May at the Cowie Café within the Stonehaven Recreation Ground, when all members, supporters and friends are warmly welcome.
The quick agenda will cover some of the club’s activities during the year, including what was certainly regarded as a cracking Burns Supper at the Station Hotel back in January, topped off by a spellbinding Immortal Memory from Professor Sir Geoffrey Palmer KT, OBE, Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, Scotland’s first black professor and a simply lovely human being!

Long-serving committee member and present treasurer Cathie Dawson is to stand down after several decades of continuous service to the club, bringing to an end (at least in the meantime!) a remarkable Smith Family dynasty which has lasted 70 years. We have an able substitute lined up for her but with a couple of other long servers also ‘stepping back into the ranks’, we’re seeking folk for the roles of president, vice-president and secretary, with the firm promise that no-one will be press-ganged and that experienced committee members will always be there for advice.
With the recent sad passing of Douglas Samways, we are also hoping that some might consider joining with us in continuing his long dedication to our “Burns in Primary Schools” project.
If attending on 20th, folk should note that the café venue should preferably be accessed via the main front entrance then through the inner left-hand vestibule door to the Cowie Bar, where (and you could grab a soft or alcoholic drink en route) the barman will direct you outside via the rear exit doorway, to the cafe entrance overlooking the bowling green.
Alternatively for those who know the layout, it can be accessed more easily by simply walking past the rear of the Tennis Pavilion then bearing left. There’s ample parking. Do please come along!
