THIS weekend Stonehaven will host the British championship of a sport requiring both strength and skill.
Quoits are metal rings weighing up to 5kg – and must be thrown some 21 yards towards a target in a bed of soft clay.
Once a hugely popular sport, quoiting boasts an ancient history and is supposedly the game the ancient Greek deity Apollo was playing with his lover Hyacinth which ultimately resulted in his death.
More recently popular in mining communities, it is now played in just a few British clubs – including the Dunnottar Quoiting Club, which was established in 1890.
So Saturday’s championship offers an opportunity to see the country’s finest exponents of quoiting in action, and keeping the ancient sport alive – see the details below.
