Stonehaven Golf Club – results

Saturday’s Stableford produced some scintillating scoring with Stonehaven’s golfers taking full advantage of benign conditions. 73 of the 148 entrants bettered their handicaps with the winner, Charles Gordon, notching no less than six birdies in his winning total of 46 points, a remarkable feat. Club captain Ian Wood managed two birdies and a cheeky eagle on the 17th in securing runners-up spot (proof positive as to how forgiving the conditions were) and Steve Guzik finished third on 44 points. Commiserations must go to Steve, probably still shaking his head at how a six birdie sub par round couldn’t win him the spoils. On another day he’d have walked it.

Special mention also goes to David Summers for shooting three birdie twos during an impressive round, yet even this achievement was trumped by winner Charles Gordon who shot four of them! It was an incredible day’s scoring and the Tartan Tour can this week surely expect an influx of applications carrying Stonehaven postcodes.

Saturday’s event was a fund raiser for Marie Curie, over £300 being raised for this most worthwhile of charities. The day’s play also saw the introduction of on-course refreshments with bacon rolls and burgers being cooked alfresco by The View Restaurant to feed hungry competitors seeking sustenance. The refreshments were on offer at the top of the path that leads players across the gully holes of 5, 6 & 7, and proved very popular. The club is committed to improving the golfing experience for members and visitors alike and, given the outstanding quality of the day’s scoring, something special must be going into those burger ingredients. I’ve already placed my order for a dozen next Saturday.

1st – Charles Gordon (46 pts). 2nd – Ian Wood (46 pts). 3rd – Steve Guzik (44 pts).

The midweek competition was somewhat curtailed thanks to the advance of haar over the course in the late afternoon. In typical style, it set like jelly, refused to budge and resulted in inevitable course closure. Sufficient numbers had completed their rounds earlier in the day for the competition to remain valid however, David Bell taking the honours with a splendid score of 60.

Wednesday Stroke Results

1st – David Bell (60). 2nd – Mike Hampton (62). 3rd-  Ramsay Bell (62).

The Ladies Sunday Medal was won this week by J Hunt and the midweek Medal by J Bradford who narrowly nudged Jane Louise Kennedy into second place. The Ladies Section has a busy schedule over coming weeks ahead of their club championship in a month’s time, with several Medals and Stablefords to be contested.

The Junior Section continues to thrive and it’s a blessing to see so many youngsters on the fairways of Stonehaven Golf Club. Molly Skidmore won this weekend’s 9 hole Stableford with an excellent 23 point total, Jamie Sutherland finishing second with 19 points.
