Stonehaven Golf Club this week…

This haar halts play malarkey has become an irksome bedfellow for Stonehaven Golf Club in recent weeks. Once again on Saturday morning golfers could barely see their own shoeleaces never mind the first fairway until the haar gradually dissipated to allow later arrivals a game. The planned Greensomes competition had to be shelved and an individual stroke play event hastily scheduled in its place, Ali Robertson winning with a nett 59 on a day of tremendous scoring.

The midweek competitions weren’t affected by the weather however and the Ladies Innes Majority Final play-off took place with Jan Bradford edging out Morag Duncan over eighteen holes. It was a busy week all round for the Ladies Section, they also had a Medal competition, results below, and their annual outing, this year at Alford. Doreen Seery (pictured) won the outing salver with 38 Stableford points on a comparatively level playing surface in contrast to Stoney’s humps and bumps…but it’s always good to return to SGC, there’s no place like home!

The Girls’ Golf Hub began this week, an initiative to introduce young girls to the game of golf, it will be running on Monday afternoons throughout July. 14 girls aged 7-13 are currently taking part but further participants are very welcome, just contact the club for details on 01569 762124. The sessions are sponsored by Scottish Golf and delivered by roving golf professional Kamran Zeynalov, ably assisted by lady members Fiona Currie & Fiona Lamont.

The Men’s Section contested a Wednesday Medal with sun, rain and wind taking turns to bless the course, conditions remaining largely favourable though.  Gavin Lawson and Michael Wood must have felt their scoring was sufficient to carry the day as they stepped from the 18th green with 60 and 61 respectively, but Graeme McFarlane carded a nett 59 to pip them. Alex Keith and William Shepherd won their respective divisions (Alex Keith in particular lined up for a pasting by WHS next time it calculates his handicap).

Various other match play events continue as the summer rolls on, competitors haggling over mutually convenient tee off times. You try arranging four individual diaries to coincide pleasingly given work, family and holiday commitments. It’s like herding cats. And when you do finally agree a time lately, you get up there to find haar thicker than your granny’s gravy.

The juniors continue to roam the lush green fairways with gay abandon , revelling in their summer holidays. This is the time of their lives, devoting six weeks to developing  T-shirt tans, reducing handicaps and creating lifelong memories. That’s what SGC is all about; golf, friendships and memories, for all ages. Come and join us, you’d be most welcome.
