Last weekend saw the climax of one of golf’s long awaited elite events, the prestigious curtain raiser to mark the beginning of another golfing season. With the leaderboard chock full of household names, each fresh from a winter devoted to the gymnasium and practice range, the world licked its lips at the prospect of another golfing masterclass.
With several holes remaining, it was clear that this year’s event had become something of a procession, the leader striding confidently out front, refusing to be reigned in by the chasing pack. It was with a degree of comfort therefore that the winner, Steve Crawford, triumphed in Stonehaven Golf Club’s inaugural 2022 Strokeplay competition, winning by three shots to throw down the gauntlet ahead of a long season to come.
Just like the winner, the runner-up (Craig Martin) also had the crowd on its feet with a closing birdie, but was left to rue a calamitous triple bogey at the beginning of his round (the 2nd hole). Ian Carnie finished third, also three strokes adrift of the winner, and the rest of the 100+ field formed an orderly queue further behind, many licking their wounds after a hapless struggle in gusty winds.
Regardless of their final placing, all competitors had the consolation of two nights in front of the telly to take in another significant golfing event, the Masters at Augusta National. Scottie Scheffler won this one and hats off to him for that, but until he’s faced Stoney’s own Amen Corner (the Field) I think we can agree the jury is still out on whether he can rightfully claim to be the world’s number one.
The Ladies Section wrapped up their Winter travails last week, their aggregated competition results detailed below. And with that the club marks a formal end to the Winter season, the Men’s Section having completed their Winter programme at the close of March.
