Stonehaven Golf Club this week

With the Open Championship taking place further down the coast, it’s been a struggle to leave the television for long enough to complete your own round of golf. However, those SGC members who did vacate the sofa last week did so in style, the scoring suggesting they’d paid close attention while watching Cameron Smith tear up the Old Course.

The Seniors played the first round of their Championship (Sky’s cameras sadly conspicuous by their absence) with a healthy field of 44 sharing the sunshine. There were varying degrees of success, a smattering of no-returns at one end and a six shot lead at the other. Front runner Neil Irvine is no stranger to silverware and even at this early stage it looks likely he’ll be reaching for the Duraglit once again. A first round 70 finds him a comfortable distance from the chasing pack and he has plenty of experience in protecting, and extending, a lead. Still, golfers know they’re only one bad curry away from disaster so the tournament is still there for the winning.

The weekend Stableford raised good money for the RNLI and provided remarkable scoring. A 36 point haul will win you the competition on some days, it’s the equivalent of an even par round of golf. Last Saturday however it’d merely have crept you into 42nd place, superb scoring being the order of the day. Stuart Irvine rediscovered the ability to keep his ball on the golf course in notching a splendid 42 pts and Charlie Watts’ equalled this tally to finish runner-up, but a glorious birdie on the final hole clinched victory for John Cowling.

Scoring in the midweek Medal was impressive too, Fraser Stark edging out Chris Brown by virtue of a better back nine, the players took advantage of perfect conditions. The Ladies weren’t to be outdone with scoring very good in each of their respective competitions, the Medal in particular a close fought race. Women combined with men later in the week for a Mixed Greensomes event, the Curries proving red hot with a winning 38 points (apologies, couldn’t resist).
