A BENCH in tribute to a dedicated volunteer was unveiled today at the Tolbooth Museum
The late Ian Balgowan was one of the most well-known characters of the old town and founder of the Tolbooth Museum where he regaled visitors with tales of his life at sea.
Today, a bench crafted by his friend Jimmy Malcolm was put in place in memory of Ian’s contribution to the harbour-front visitor attraction.
As in all of Mr Malcolm’s work, the detail gives both entertaining and informative clues to the subject in hand – like Ian’s early life on a Glenbervie farm.

Ian went on to skipper a series of fishing boats, including two vessels named Sweet Promise and The Harvester. The names of all the boats he worked on are included in the bench’s artwork, along with some fine representations of a good catch.

And Ian’s fondness of a good chat is highlighted in a plaque.
