Stoney Golf This Week

By Alex Russon / July 12, 2026

Following disappointing campaigns in the recent club championship, two of the clubs Hall Of Fame all stars roared back to form this week, as true winners do.

Firstly, Alex Russon belied his off colour performance in last month’s flagship event by cementing a (moral) victory in the (foreshortened, and ultimately abandoned) Saturday Sweep. Coasting along at only one over par after three holes, a trio of consummate fours opening his round, the klaxon was regrettably sounded to fetch the players back into the clubhouse due to ‘fog’. With Russon on course for a net 63 (if you pro-rata his three holes over the full eighteen), his nailed on victory was reprehensibly denied by a trigger happy official deeming a couple of passing clouds reason enough to abandon the event. So for the second time in a fortnight we had the sight of Graeme Wilson, knuckles tight around the steering wheel of his Ford Fiesta, hurtling down the track that runs alongside the railway line, flashing his headlights and sounding his horn as if he were Fireman Sam en-route to an emergency. We really need to buy a louder klaxon to avoid this preposterous farrago.

Earlier in the week, it had been Neil Irvine’s turn to make amends for an indifferent club championship performance by securing its poor relation; The Seniors Championship. In a three round event, given most of the seniors would keel over attempting four rounds in quick succession, he pipped Adam Smith by three shots to win the title, Colin Arthur only a shot further back. And talking of Colin, he and Scott Crabb tied for the Handicap version so will be playing an eighteen hole play-off in due course to determine an outright winner. Somewhat ironic that really, that the event be reduced to three rounds to protect ageing limbs and tickers only for a dead-heat to send them out for a further eighteen holes after all. Perhaps the play-off should incorporate a quarterly hydration break a-la the World Cup, just to keep their energy levels up

But back to the Irvine dynasty, Neil’s success now means that in the space of a month, both father and son (Craig) have triumphed in their respective championships. The family Christmas dinner at the Irvines will doubtless be a gruelling affair for Neil’s wife this year, the men swaggering around like Billy Bigtime, swapping tales of how they’ve united to take over Stonehaven GC 2026. Hopefully their humility matches that of my own and they don’t behave too odiously.
